RPI - Day One

 Richard Johnston of Panmure Bridge talked about how students would rather focus on learning to achieve a goal, rather than “just do reading”. Robyn’s integrated statistical data inquiry cycle was very much along the lines of my style of teaching. Across the curriculum. Getting student voice, gathering evidence then turning the learning towards an almost “Design For Change” cross curricula unit. I could see my class using similar ideas in our Inquiry work this year. I was also surprised to see Sheena Cameron’s Teaching Reading Comprehension strategies pop up in a Manaiakalani course. Time to dust off my wall display posters, maybe it’s also time to bring back my copy of “The Iron Man”  by Ted Hughes (because it REALLY fits the teaching of these strategies to children) as well?


The “Growing Good Readers” session highlighted that, although I’m not an academic, what I already do in my practice is proven to be effective in raising achievement and engagement. I’m looking forward to discussing the ideas I highlighted as areas to improve upon, just to hash out whether or not these are something I should focus on now. 


Taskboards were something I’d hoped we’d cover, quite early. I’ve seen these displayed on class sites from other schools, but wasn’t sure how onerous these would be to create/implement. I’m going to use this exemplar in my class, once I get my groups established. At this stage, with everything that is going around in my head from this first day, I need to let things percolate and filter down.
